Standing With Strength: How to Be an Ally for Black Pregnant Women (PT. 2)

Here is Part 2 of our quick guide on How To Become An Ally.

Black women are powerful, radiant, and deserving of a safe and supported pregnancy journey. However, the reality is Black women in the US face a maternal health crisis.

As allies, we can play a crucial role in dismantling these disparities and uplifting Black mamas. Here's how:

Educate Yourself:

  • Research the Black maternal health crisis: Learn about the root causes, like implicit bias in healthcare and lack of access to quality care.

  • Listen to Black Mamas: Read memoirs, listen to podcasts by Black birth workers, and follow Black doulas and midwives on social media.

Show Up, But Not Over:

  • Center her voice: Let her guide the support she needs. Don't assume you know what's best.

  • Respect her autonomy: Pregnancy is a personal journey. Celebrate her choices and offer encouragement, not judgment.

  • Amplify Black voices: Share resources by Black birth professionals, donate to Black midwifery practices, and promote positive narratives about Black motherhood.

Remember, allyship is a journey, not a destination. Be open to learning, make mistakes gracefully, and keep showing up for Black mamas.

By working together, we can create a world where Black women experience safe, joyful, and empowering pregnancies.

Consider making a donation to the Edith Institute today. Every contribution helps create a future where Black mamas experience safe and joyful pregnancies.
