Support Black Mothers: Transforming Maternal Healthcare Through "The Mama We See"
For many, pregnancy is a time of hope and joy. But for Black mothers, it often comes with heightened risks and challenges within the healthcare system. From gestational hypertension to obstetric hemorrhage, Black mothers face complications at disproportionate rates. This reality calls for urgent action, and "The Mama We See" project is stepping up to make a difference.
Led by Edith Institute, "The Mama We See" is a transformative initiative that centers the experiences of Black mothers to drive meaningful improvements in maternal healthcare. Through in-depth interviews and education reform, the project aims to build a healthcare system that listens to, respects, and values Black mothers.
Why Listening to Black Mothers Matters
At the heart of "The Mama We See" are stories—stories that too often go unheard in the healthcare system. This initiative focuses on conducting interviews with Black mothers who have experienced conditions like pre-eclampsia or obstetric hemorrhage. But these interviews are not just about data collection; they’re about amplifying voices that can reshape healthcare from the ground up.
Two Key Goals of the Interviews:
Capturing Vital Experiences
By listening to Black mothers, we gain a deeper understanding of the barriers and biases they encounter in the healthcare system. These personal accounts provide critical insights into the challenges and gaps in maternal healthcare.Transforming Medical Education
The insights gathered will inform continuing medical education (CME) programs for healthcare professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to provide equitable, bias-free care to Black mothers during pregnancy and childbirth.
