What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday, celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving in the US, is a global movement that encourages people to give back. Whether through donations, volunteering, fundraising, or acts of kindness, it’s a day to reflect on the importance of generosity and take action to improve lives.

How Did Giving Tuesday Begin?

The movement began in 2012 as a collaborative effort by New York’s 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation. Their vision was simple: create a day dedicated to doing good in response to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. What started as a small initiative has since grown into a worldwide phenomenon, inspiring people across 85+ countries to participate in acts of generosity.

Giving Tuesday emphasizes the power of collective action. It’s a reminder that no matter how small the contribution, every effort counts. The movement has raised billions of dollars globally, but its impact goes beyond monetary contributions. It fosters community spirit, amplifies awareness for critical issues, and reminds us of our shared humanity.

Introducing the Mama We See Campaign

This Giving Tuesday, we’re inviting you to be part of a transformative initiative: the Mama We See campaign. Our mission is to improve maternal healthcare for Black mothers, who face disproportionately high risks of pregnancy-related complications like pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, and obstetric hemorrhage.

Why This Matters:
Black mothers are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts. These disparities stem from systemic inequities, biases in healthcare, and a lack of culturally competent care. Our campaign aims to change that by:

• Amplifying Voices: We’re conducting interviews with Black mothers to capture their stories and understand their unique challenges.

• Transforming Medical Education: Insights from these interviews will be used to train healthcare providers, reduce bias, and improve care for Black mothers.
