The Real Christmas Magic: A Love Letter to the Moms Who Make It Happen

Every year, as the holiday season rolls around, it seems like magic takes over. Twinkling lights, perfectly wrapped gifts, the warm smell of cinnamon in the air—all these things just appear. But behind every bit of that magic is a mom, working tirelessly to make the season bright, even when the world around her feels dim.

As a woman, I’ve come to understand that our Christmas magic often has layers. It’s not just about the gifts under the tree or the stockings hanging just right; it’s about creating a sense of belonging, joy, and love in a world that doesn’t always reflect those back at us.

For me, it starts early—plotting, planning, and sometimes sacrificing to make it all come together.

But let’s be real—it’s exhausting. Carrying the weight of family traditions, societal expectations, and often, the unspoken responsibility of making sure our kids feel seen and celebrated is no small task. And for Black moms, that weight can feel even heavier. Black mamas aren’t just trying to create a picture-perfect holiday; they’re trying to create something that can serve as an anchor in a world that sometimes tries to unmoor them.

Still, we show up. We bake the cookies, even if they’re a little burnt on the edges.

But this year, I want to offer something else—a reminder to rest, even amidst the magic-making. Sometimes, the most meaningful gift you can give your family is showing them how to prioritize yourself, even during the holidays. Leave the dishes for later. Take a nap. Let someone else handle the ribbon curling.

Moms, we deserve to feel the magic, too.

So, here’s to us, the women behind the scenes, weaving love into every corner of our homes this Christmas. Here’s to creating memories that will last far longer than the toys under the tree. And here’s to remembering that the magic starts within us—because, honestly, we’re the real gift.

Happy Holidays. Let’s keep shining.
